Freestyle Update

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Hello Everyone,

The kids are just beginning to get into the competition season and for the most part and are all looking pretty confident. We had a few kids attend a Rail Jam at Blue Mountain this weekend. As well as another group of our mogul kids will be attending Horseshoe Valley’s first mogul competition of the year next weekend.

We will be holding out fist mogul based Friday training this week at Horseshoe Valley for the bump kids. But will commence with regular Friday training at Beaver Valley for the Park and Pipe kids that will be attending next weekends Slopestyle event at Craigleith Ski Club.

This seasons Friday training was inclusive in the price of any of our High Performance programs. Unfortunately due to the commitment, cost increase, as well as ability to miss 10 Fridays worth of school. We did not receive the commitment needed to facilitate this many extra training days. So in reflection of this. We have wisely chosen 5 Fridays for training based around some of our athletes main competitions this season.

The 5 Friday training sessions will be held as follows:

Friday Jan. 29th @ Horseshoe Valley (Mogul) and Beaver Valley (Park and Pipe) Friday Feb. 5th @ Beaver Valley Friday Feb. 12th @ Beaver Valley Friday Feb. 19th @ Beaver Valley Thursday March 4th @ Mt. St. Louis

Another reminder to everyone. If you have not yet done so. It would be very much appreciated and beneficial if everyone were to sit down with their little ones and fill out their goal setting sheets and have them returned to their coaches by next weekend, or at your earliest convenience. This way we can ensure that all of our kids are on the right track and on their way to reaching their own personal goals.

Well, I hope this note finds everyone well and I look forward to hearing from you.

Please feel free to hit me up with any questions that you may have regarding Freestyle Skiing at freestyle@beavervalley.ca

I wish I could say see you on the slopes. But I’ll see you around the club house.

Update from Snow School

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

This week we had “4 perfect ski days” (Beardsall, 2010), from Thursday to Sunday with a touch of rain to usher us home on Sunday.

Thank you to all who are helping the Snowschool programs roll out smoothly and on-time!  Just when we thought things were settling down we’ve got a ton of excitement coming up.

Photo days are Jan 30/31 and Feb 6/7 for Valley Critters programs and Family Fun Weekend with a Harry Potter theme is coming up on February 13,14,15.

Now’s the time to think about March Break entertainment for your skiing/snowboarding enthusiasts!  We have a perfect selection of camp programs to end the season in the beautiful spring weather.

See the snow school desk to register.   Happy February!

Gummy Bear House League

Sunday, January 24th, 2010

Believe it or not, this children’s house league is into its 12 season!!! Many of our coaches have been racers themselves in this league. The first race of the season was held on January 10th, what a beautiful day – I guess we earned it after all the nasty weather that we had for our house league races last year and the cancellations that we had to work around!! You couldn’t have asked for a nicer day.

This venture was started 12 years ago by Peter Hibbard (Turbo) and Katie Nicoll to bring together the children in the ski school and racing programs. It is a non-travelling team that has a lot of fun and the children are introduced to a race course in a fun, competitive manner using a dual slalom course.

Over 70 racers came down through the dual slalom on Eager Beaver – each having four runs through the race course. I would venture to guess that there may easily have been just as many parents crowding the sidelines watching, cheering, and having a great time.

Our special awards for the first race go to:

Alexandra and Holly Nichols racing one another and being great sports

Coach Alexandra Bain for loosing her helmet

Adeleine Lyon for our one and only fall girl

Team Standing to Date are as Follows:

1st        Team Tangerine           22 points

2nd        Team Lime                  21 points

3rd        Team Amber               19 points

4th        Team Violet                17 points

5th        Team Magenta            16 points

6th        Team Turquoise           15 points

6th        Team Scarlet               15 points

8th        Team Emerald             13 points

Keep practising those tucks and we will see you back in two weeks on January 24th for Race #2.

Snow School Update

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

The Snowschool programs have been relishing in the awesome snow we’ve had thus far this season.  Thanks to everyone for your patience and understanding as our team does our best to ensure each student is in an appropriately suited group.  We also owe a huge thanks to our team of volunteers in the red jackets who make it possible for us to give more students one-on-one attention.  We are still looking for more volunteers with the snowschool for Saturday and/or Sunday mornings.  Please contact Dina at dina@beavervalley.ca with a resume.

To help us get our groups moving right away in the mornings we’d like to remind students and parents that the morning youth programs (incl: crossover and bowlbusters) run from 9:30-11:30am and the Valley Critters run from 9:45-11:45am.   Punctual arrival and pick-ups are expected.  If arriving late, parents are asked to help in finding the student’s group on the hill.  Also, please communicate with the instructor if you would like your child released from program without being picked up.

There are lots of social events on the calendar coming up!

Photos for the Valley Critter programs will be happening January 30th/31st and February 6th/7th.  Please be sure to see your instructor on the 30th and 31st to communicate about the photos.

We have Family Fun Weekend Feb. 13-15th, which includes the Downhill Dummy race.

Check the BVSC website for more info!

Park Update

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Thanks to everyone this weekend that attended the Quiksilver King/Queen of the park series. We saw a lot of smiling faces and that is what this is all about. Thanks also to the Quiksilver Team who did guest coaching with BV snowboard athletes and judged in the Quik King/Queen of the park series. Some of the highlights of the event were Sam Koven 1 footed attacks on the dance floor and the showdown between Silas McKinnon and Chris Fellner on the Urban Bar Rail. On the Skiing side we had Dolly Lane Stomping everything and some wild 270 onto the Urban rail from Tom Birnie.  Looking forward to seeing more of this intenseness at the next Quik series on Sunday the 24th. Keep your eyes peeled for posters and updates around the clubhouse for the Quik teams next guest coach experience we welcome all boarders.

We will be adding more rails and revamping the Jump line in Andy’s Playground this week. We will be adding the Tear Drop, Battleship, 30ft shotgun and 20ft shotgun rails to Andy’s. Cat’s Meow also now has 3 new rail setups and a new step up feature.

New Park Program

This past weekend was a huge success for our Park boarding program. Our numbers are now currently up to 24 athletes and still growing. Our Intro to park group was starting to learn how to spin off of jump features already and proper rail techniques.   We have coaches to accommodate all abilities from intro to park to an advanced, competitive class. Come out and support our intermediate and advanced athletes this weekend at the AOS slopestyle event hosted at our club in Andy’s Playground. Parents that have athletes in our program please meet with Caleb for 10:30 at the North Deck just before class begins. There will be an update on our group selection open to feedback on how we have divided athletes into groups.

Anti-Idling Campaign

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

To jump start Beaver Valley’s commitment to a sustainable future this season, we are joining with the Ontario Ski Resorts Association and implementing an Anti-Idling Campaign at the Club. We will soon have signs and posters put up to encourage drivers of all vehicles to turn off their engines when standing still.  This includes passenger vehicles, maintenance vehicles, bus drivers etc.  There will be baseline “before” and “after” observation studies of our current idle habits, by student researchers, to see if the program helps us to reduce our contribution to greenhouse gas emissions, which contributes to global warming.  You can find more information at http://www.skiontario.ca/envbestprac.asp.

Let’s all help keep our air clean and turn off our engines.
