The Weatherman is Wrong Again!

Friday, March 27th, 2009

The forecasters have been saying the “R” word all week when referring to tomorrow, Saturday. It now seems the rain will fall tonight, and the prediction is for sunny skies with a high of 9°C to kickoff the weekend. It looks like we will have a mixed bag for closing day Sunday.

The Club played host to the Parkscapers program on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. This is the second time this program has been offered in Ontario. It was started by the Ontario Snow Resorts Association and Gougeon Insurance to promote learning and sharing information among the people involved in designing, building, maintaining and operating terrain parks. BVSC has been involved in Parkscapers from its start three years ago.

A by-product of hosting the program is a new park! As part of the curriculum, the 24 participants worked together to redesign our park and it was tested at the end of the program by some top riders.

A word of caution: at first glance the park looks like it did last weekend. I would ask all riders to easy style the park a couple of time before taking the features. Take offs and landings have changed quite a bit, check it out thoroughly before taking off!

Still lots of snow on the slopes for another weekend of sliding. South looks great and Avalanche has been groomed! Come join us for some more sun ‘n fun!

Happy Trails,
Parker

Glorious Weather – a March Break to Remember!

Friday, March 20th, 2009

Even before it began, March Break was looking like it would be a fantastic time to be at the Club. Now, as it draws to a close, we realize how truly amazing it has been! From day one on March 14th brilliant sunshine and temperatures well above freezing have been the order of the day - day after day! From Sunday to Wednesday the daily high temperature went above 10°C every day and although this cost us some snow cover, night time lows were cold enough to prevent a large scale meltdown. As a result we’ve had plenty of snow to enjoy the special spring flavour of our favourite snow sports all week!Tomorrow the week long festivities continue with competitors ripping up the bumps on Avalanche as Mogul Mania returns. Then enjoy the season’s final après-ski. Don’t forget your Crazy Hat!

Please note: Our annual year end staff appreciation party is happening Sunday afternoon/evening. As in past years, in order to allow all staff to participate, the Club will close at 3:00pm Sunday afternoon. Thank you for your understanding and support for this great team.

The Club will be closed from Monday to Friday to reopen Saturday for closing weekend.

Happy Trails,

Parker

John Zsolt Memorial Beach House Fund

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

With the permission and support of the family, the Club has set up the John Zsolt Memorial Beach House Fund.  John was responsible for the architectural design of the Beach House and had been working closely with Dan Beardsall on the design and drawings needed to obtain the necessary permits for the construction of the Beach House. His painting of the Beach House is currently featured on the wall outside the Members’ Lounge.

Heather, Jillian and Haley are committed to the Beach House in John’s memory and are supportive of a Memorial Fund to help with the completion of this project.   Contributions to the Memorial Fund are intended to help build the deck and bring to life John’s vision for a place to gather and share memories with great friends.

If you wish to contribute to this Fund, contact the Club Office and they would be happy to assist you.

CLUB SLOPESTYLE CHAMPIONSHIP BIG SUCCESS!

Awards Photo #1

Awards Photo #1

BV’S 4th annual Club Slopestyle Championship was the biggest and best yet. Perfect spring riding conditions and a bluebird sunny day delivered one of the best days of the season for 150 Slopestyle competitors.

Andy’s Playground Park was in great shape thanks to the work of Park Manager Caleb Bosse and his crew. Caleb created a new smaller jump and box line for the younger riders at the top of the park, and fine tuned the bigger triple jump line for the more accomplished riders. Due to the large number of entries the Club Slopestyle Championship was limited to the top half of the park for expediency. All riders got one run through the course to show off their best tricks and style, except ages 11-20 received two runs, with their best counting.

The top of the park featured a party atmosphere with picnic tables, music, and complimentary drinks and BBQ for all of the riders, their families, event volunteers and officials. It was a great fun hang-out from which to watch the event.

It was exciting to see so many young competitors this year with 55 under the age of 11, including seven girls age six and under. The largest and some of the most competitive categories were the boys age 7-8, age 9-10, age 11-12 and age 13-14.

A ton of sick tricks were thrown by the older riders including freeski standouts Cameron Keith and Elliott Lane, the latter who won best freeski hit of the day. On the snowboard side, highlights included runs by Brendan Hoffman, Jeff Horlor, Chris Fellner and his younger brother John, who won best snowboard hit of the day.

The awards on the north deck of the Clubhouse attracted one of the biggest crowds of the year. It didn’t hurt that it was an epic warm and sunny close to a great afternoon. For full results check the BV web site and the Clubhouse bulletin board.

Big thanks to all of the volunteers that helped make the event possible: Dave Robertson and family, Michelle Green, Cathy Wiskel, Sandy Atkin and family, Nancy Mills-Jarrett and the Jarrett family, Andrew Hauerbach, Jeff & Carol Koven, Vanessa Booth, Sandra Hoffman, Nancy D’Amico, and Daryl Turnbull.

Thanks to all the BV staff: Caleb Bosse, Ryan Ceasar, Jarrod Adams, Brendan Buchar, Max Dussault, the BV park crew, Gayl Creutzberg, and the BV office staff.

Big thanks to all of the snowboard and ski prize sponsors who threw down $4,000 worth of product prizes: Quiksilver, Roxy, Billabong, Volcom, Salomon, K2, Ride, Burton, Bonfire, Scott, Oakley, Spy, Orage, Vans, Insight, Capix, Rome, Skull Candy, DaKine, Forum, SBC Skier Magazine, and Snowboard Canada Magazine.

BV’S BEST SCORE AT TELUS TRIPLE CHALLENGE, BLUE MOUNTAIN

This past Thursday, Friday and Saturday several of BV’s best competed in Blue Mountain’s Telus Triple Challenge, Ontario’s most prestigious pro and amateur event of the year in both snowboarding and freeskiing. With $25,000 in pro prize money on the line, the event attracts competitors from as far afield as Whistler.

BV competitors included snowboarders Stef King, Leanna King, and Chris Fellner, as well as BV’s assistant Park Manager Ryan Ceasar. BV skiers included Elliott Lane, Cameron Keith and coach Matt Dussault. When the snow spray cleared BV riders scored two podiums and four top 15 finishes as follows:

Stef King: 2nd - Women’s Snowboard Pro-Am Slopestyle

Leanna King: 2nd - Women’s Snowboard Pro Rail Jam

Ryan Ceasar: 4th - Men’s Snowboard Pro Big Air

Elliott Lane:  7th - Men’s Freeski Pro-Am Slopestyle

Chris Fellner: 9th - Men’s Snowboard Pro-Am Slopestyle

Matt Dussault: 12th - Men’s Freeski Pro Rail Jam

Cameron Keith: 27th - Men’s Freeski Pro-Am Slopestyle

Congrats to all the riders. Check out story and photos, including a great shot of Leanna King in the Pro Rail Jam at:
